May Days Poems -'The Lolly Shop' May 8

 May 8

I found myself visiting a traditional Lolly Shop in Battery Point, Hobart, Tasmania on this day in 2016. It was my first visit to Hobart in more than 30 years. Discovering the old lolly shop was a blast from the past. A compelling allure for the sweet tooth who was standing beside me that day. We ventured inside and all those childhood memories surfaced. All those sights and smells and sweet treasure in jars was irresistible. We gave in to sweet temptation, quite willingly. A couple of all day suckers...

The Lolly Shop

Into the lolly shop we’d pop

For sixpence worth of mixed lollies

Lollygagging with a white paper bag

Chocolate bullets, eight a penny

Spearmint leaves, to thrill the tongue

Sherbet bombs

Jellied snakes

Choice times.

A bag of mixed delights

Sugery

And succulent

For young taste buds

Sweet treat memories

Lolly shop

Oh, lolly shop.
