Thoughts and Observations On A Sunday


 A boy, possibly 12-13 enters the Filling Station Café  and sits awkwardly with his parents. He is wearing calf high black socks with a pair of mauve coloured plastic Crocs. Could this be a case of child abuse through the use of public shaming, or is it merely a fashion crime?

 If only 1 % of the population are actually gluten intolerant. It makes it a marketing miracle to sell so many gluten free food products to the masses.

 Actually, I find myself quite astounded to discover you can purchase spinach in a family pack in my local supermarket.

 It seems an increasing number of television advertisements are featuring the phenomenon of ‘talking food.’ Talking broccoli, French fries, and carrots have joined the ranks of talking M and M’s. I find it most difficult to digest.

 'Psyllium Husks' –sounds like a character from a fantasy novel, instead of an offering in the health food section of my supermarket.
___________________________________________________

 I am pleased that research findings have exonerated coriander (aka, cilantro).  Scientists have discovered that some people are born with a genetic predisposition to find the taste of often maligned plant unpleasant.  Me, I quite like it.

    I like how I can infer where you've been by reading your thoughts.
    And I'm in agreement with you on the talking food. Makes me not want to eat it if I can talk to it.

      I'm glad Lorie. I was conscious as I wrote that my readers would infer my locations. They say we write best when we allow our readers to think. Talking food is certainly off putting. I agree with you.

      Hhmmm? who knows Tara. Our notebooks contain many beginnings. The challenge is which one to pick up and expand.

Learning How to 'Zoom In' When Writing

It is important for young writers to understand that not all parts of a story are equal. There are parts through which a writer moves quickly, and important parts where the writer slows down and lingers a while. This is where the writer might intensify the action or reveal the character’s reactions in greater detail. Young writers need to know that this is a deliberate strategy on the part of the author. The author consciously zooms in. The writer uses a magnifying glass to view a part of the story more closely; to focus on a moment and to slow down time. When an important part of the story is enlarged upon, it   is a signal to the reader, that this part of the story is important. The strategy of ‘zooming in’ goes by many names: ‘exploding a moment’ ‘magnifying a moment’, ‘hotspot’ ‘snapshot’, ‘adding detail’ or ‘slowing the action.’  What ever the name, the idea is the same. Writing Irresistible LEADS with Grade One Students

I have been reading Australian author, Kate Grenville’s book, ‘The Writing Book – A Practical Guide For Fiction Writers.’ Grenville writes about leads and reminds us that the beginning of a piece of writing needs to be irresistible . Further to this she reminds the reader that it doesn’t matter where you begin a piece of writing- just begin! Grenville quotes Ezra Pound who said, ‘It doesn’t matter which leg of the table you make first as long as it stands up in the end.’ The writer’s aim is to glue the reader to the page. Grenville also makes the observation that sometimes you need to write the whole story before returning to the start in order to write a great beginning or ‘lead’ for it. UPDATED, May 2020 As a frequent visitor to schools I have the great pleasure of working with groups of young, enthusiastic poets and their teachers. When I arrive in a classroom, young poets are often pre-loaded with questions, and most keen to have them answered.  I try to answer as many as I can, but we frequently run out of time, and the poetry caravan moves on to the next classroom. UPDATED February 2022 Writing in response to literature can be a great way for students to organize their thoughts, explore what they think, and generate ideas. Writing Opposite Poems

 O pp o s ite  P oem s In his book, ' How To Write Poetry,'  Paul Janeczko presents the idea of opposite poems. Paul suggests they could also be referred to as antonym poems. This is wordplay and it's fun to try. Here are some examples Paul provides to help us see very clearly how these short little poems work. A goat that butts you from behind Paul Janeczko You will  notice the poems are written in rhyming couplets. They can be extended so long as you remember to write in couplets.
