Pen Preferences

For this writing piece I didn't have to look any further than my left hand. I was holding the idea right there -and my deeper thoughts followed...


I have always been pen particular. Pernickity, or should that be penickity? My pen of choice is a Uniball Gel Impact pen with black ink. Always black ink. Must be black ink.  It is the pen I prefer when writing. It feels comfortable in my hand.


When writing with this pen, words seem to flow more easily. They effortlessly spill across the page. I actually feel like I am speed writing. Being left handed, this continues to be my most glorious delusion. I also have a Lamy fountain pen which also uses black ink cartridges. I enjoy writing with this pen too. It has become accustomed to my left handed peculiarities. I would never a let a right hander use it. Call me fussy. It won’t change my thinking on pen sharing.


Not for me, a pen of questionable origin, no generic biro with a chewed end. No novelty pen with gaudy fluoro coloured ink.  As with my choice of writer’s notebook, my pen of preference is a critical consideration. I have found what works best for me and I am only prepared to entrust my word gathering to these particular pens. 


      I don’t feel comfortable with fine point pens. They have a resistance my heavy hand finds disconcerting. I choose the 1 mm pen that glides and slides across the pages of my writer’s notebook. The page disappears under words rapidly emerging from my pen. I have a pen friend! I buy them in lots of four. I am fearful of running out of ink. 


They do not last long, and they cost more than conventional pens, but such is my pen obsession. It is not uncommon for me to have three or four lodged in my shirt pocket at any one time. ‘Got enough pens?’ fellow writers ask. ‘I hope so’ I reply.


I was not surprised to discover that a number of the young writers I meet in schools have already developed a definite views on pens. I feel much easier for knowing this.


I also carry a small pencil case with markers, coloured pencils, and highlighters. I use these to draw attention to words, to spark up my writing and to highlight words, phrases or ideas in my notebook. I can also use them to create a connection between particular entries.


All writers have their idiosyncrasies. I have no problem admitting I have a penchant for pens of a particular style and ink of a certain colour. I hope you have found your particular pen preference too. The pen that feels just right when you sit down to create your words. Write on...

Slice Of Life Story-The Trials Of A Left Handed Writer

Amazingly I learnt to write using my left hand. An achievement against the prevailing beliefs of the day. My very first teacher saw it as her mission in life to ‘fix’ the poor, wretched little boy suffering from what she clearly diagnosed as left handed disease. She must have thought, 'This child must be re formatted! If he remains left handed he will be forever condemned to writing in a scrawl that no one will be able to read. Exploring Themes in Poetry With Emerging Writers

There is so much more to poetry than haiku and acrostics. Yet, so many young poets never get to experience the rich breadth of poetry beyond these highly structured forms. Why? Primarily, it’s about their teachers comfort levels with poetry. We often teach to what we know, meaning that being adventurous and taking young poets into new realms is not part of the poetic landscape for many. This sells young poets and poetry itself short. Writing Opposite Poems

 O pp o s ite  P oem s In his book, ' How To Write Poetry,'  Paul Janeczko presents the idea of opposite poems. Paul suggests they could also be referred to as antonym poems. This is wordplay and it's fun to try. Here are some examples Paul provides to help us see very clearly how these short little poems work. Learning How to 'Zoom In' When Writing

It is important for young writers to understand that not all parts of a story are equal. There are parts through which a writer moves quickly, and important parts where the writer slows down and lingers a while. This is where the writer might intensify the action or reveal the character’s reactions in greater detail. Young writers need to know that this is a deliberate strategy on the part of the author. The author consciously zooms in. The writer uses a magnifying glass to view a part of the story more closely; to focus on a moment and to slow down time. When an important part of the story is enlarged upon, it   is a signal to the reader, that this part of the story is important. The strategy of ‘zooming in’ goes by many names: ‘exploding a moment’ ‘magnifying a moment’, ‘hotspot’ ‘snapshot’, ‘adding detail’ or ‘slowing the action.’  What ever the name, the idea is the same.
