Slice of Life Story Challenge March 22 -The Rapid Decline Of Autumn Magic

The Rapid Decline of Autumn Magic

Balmy Autumn days have suddenly spiraled down, transforming from magical to a wet, soggy, humid world overnight.  A month of autumn rain has fallen in a little less than 24 hours. Wind, showers and low grey clouds have erased the sun from our day screen.

Melbourne, my home city is renowned for its interchangeable weather. The classic Crowded House song, 'Four Seasons In One Day' is in part a salute to The city’s variable weather personality. It certainly never gets boring when planning your day’s events. Complacency is a recipe for disaster. Carry an umbrella at all times and sunscreen, just in case.

In the comparative bleakness of the morning, with rain pitter-patting against the study window, these words rained upon the open page of my notebook:

Yesterday the sky
Brilliant blue
Inspired hope
The sun on my back
Warmed my bones

Today
The clouds
Wolf grey
Hang despairingly low
Like a sook’s bottom lip
The wind is a bully
It slaps my face
Bending trees to its will

I wonder where the yellow went?

  1. I can easily relate to this poem. I wish for more of the warm sun on my back.

    1. So welcoming and soothing. The sun at its best, Terje.

  2. At least the rain feeds us but that "wind is a bully" it taunts us. Hoping the weather turns towards the yellow warmth.

    1. The rain was needed Julieanne, but now it can return to more typical autumn weather.

  3. The phrase in your tag line "clouds the colour of bruises" pulled me in. Before I even read your post I had it jotted in my notebook. And after I read your post I added "wolf grey." Love your metaphor for wind and your surprise ending line. Hmmm...I think this whole poem is going in my notebook! Thanks, always, for your beautiful words.

    1. Rose, as you know, titles, tags and blurbs are most important in pulling potential readers in. I feel honoured to have this little poem considered worthy of being scribed into another writer's notebook.

  4. We have wind, but it only whips the fires. And our weather too changes so quickly. Sorry that your autumn sun disappeared in the night, but I'm glad a poem arrived.

    1. Thanks Linda. You have reminded me that at the end of the day, I must remain grateful that in the midst of a day where the weather dampened my spirits to some extent, there is joy to be found in the fact that a poem emerged.

  5. Your rapidly changing weather in Melbourne reminds me of, maybe not four seasons in one day, but our four seasons in one week at least, in southwest Ohio. My daughter will be spending some time in Australia this December. Sadly, not in Melbourne. I love the lines,
    "The clouds
    Wolf grey
    Hang despairingly low
    Like a sook's bottom lip"
Thank you for stopping by my blog today, and your kind words. I'm delighted to discover your blog! With so many Slicers, it's so hard to visit everyone. It's fun to meet new writers!
